As clients, we want to know if we can “like, know and trust” the businesses we buy from and the people whose services we use, so in this series we talk to the Changemakers who are making a difference in the world and ask them to step out into the spotlight to tell us their story.

It’s the turn of Emma Heptonstall The Divorce Alchemist

Tell us about yourself and what you do?

I’m a divorce expert and family mediator. Owned by two cats Smith & Jones, I support women through the practical and emotional aspects of divorce, including the decision to leave if that hasn’t yet been made.

How did you get started?

I began divorce coaching having firstly experienced the power of coaching myself. I trained as a coach and began using coaching techniques to support couples to reach agreements in family disputes. I also recognised that very often, women are disadvantaged in divorce because they often give financial responsibility to their husbands.

What were you doing in a previous life?

Before being a divorce coach and family mediator, I had a 13 year career as a legal adviser in Her Majesty’s Court Service. There I became a specialist family legal adviser and trainer.

Why Holistic?

What I do is very much a mixture of coaching and practical support and information. I empower women to understand the divorce process, take responsibility for and control of the decisions they need to make that best serve them and their family without handing responsibility over to a solicitor or letting their husband make all the decisions.

What’s your USP? What sets you apart from your competitors?

Although I’m a divorce expert and coach, I’m not divorced. I’m not on my own healing journey, and my support is never based on ‘when I got divorced I..’  I believe that every divorce is as unique as the couple divorcing. Having worked as a lawyer and as a practising family mediator, I understand the practicalities and the emotional traps that many women fall into on divorce.

What kind of feedback you have received from clients?

Appreciate today’s call. You’ve done a huge job with this difficult couple and I really want you to know you’re appreciated as someone who has moved our lives and understanding for the better.

The amount of knowledge I have now means I am confident to start the divorce process as soon as I reach that 2 year point (not long now!). I know I will be able to keep the costs to a minimum yet still get the divorce I want. I could not have dreamt I would be this clear-minded and strong after only 6 weeks of group-work! Thank you Emma

Being coached by Emma is like having a conversation with a friend, I always feel totally at ease with her.

Emma has a special knack of asking just the right question at just the right time to unlock my constrained thinking and there have been many lightbulb moments!

Emma gets me to think differently, be easier on myself and open up to new ways of perceiving a situation. I always come away feeling uplifted and ready to approach my goal with a fresh perspective.

Emma has helped me in a way I will never forget. I am going through a lot of issues right now with my ex and my own personal family lawyer (my lawyer is not answering any of my questions or communicating with me at all and is making me feel like I’m bothering them). I reached out to Emma with questions regarding my case. She didn’t once make me feel like I was bothering her, in fact, complete opposite! Because of her, I feel more relaxed and confident going forward with these issues. If you get the chance to work with Emma, PLEASE do not hesitate, her kind heart and open arms will ease you. Thank you again Emma.

What’s the next big project coming up for you?

Officially launching my online self study programme Get Divorce Ready. Continue to promote my book ‘How to be a Lady Who Leaves – The Ultimate Guide to Getting Divorce Ready’.

What’s your big dream?

To continue to serve women as the UK’s leading divorce coach for ladies who leave. To be a speaker and develop my authorship around divorce and family separation.
