Penny Newton-Hurley is an interpersonal communication and emotional intelligence specialist, coach, trainer, psychological safety facilitator and workplace mediator, with 35 years experience, working with multinational organisations, local councils, NHS trusts, the British Army, the RAF, Central Government departments, universities, and schools.   Her work inspires individuals and communities to cultivate empathy, understanding, and harmonious connections.

Penny’s passion for communication led her to Nonviolent Communication, from which she has developed The MECAnism for learning language. She believes this language holds the potential to truly transform the way we interact with ourselves and others, and live more purposeful, peaceful lives within and outside of the workplace. Penny has 35 years of experience in interpersonal communication, emotional intelligence and psychological safety, consulting with companies when employees and teams are in crisis – whether due to team dynamics, disharmony, relationship breakdowns, or world crises e.g. the Ukraine invation, the Iran war and changing policies in the US such as abortion laws.

Penny works with small and large businesses across the world such as Lloyds Bank, RELX (Elsevier), the British Army and RAF, the Cabinet Office, government departments, Network Rail, universities, the NHS and prisons. Training The Human Language in teams and organisations, coaching execs in self awareness and finer conversational skills, mediating between 2+ people when they have fallen out or are in difficulties, holding deep psychological safety sessions with teams.

Penny’s mission is to Change the Way the World Speaks. As a philanthropic interest, she is about to trial The Human Language in schools, and create a movement to influence the government to include this teaching in the statutory school curriculum to equip the next generation of children with vital skills of empathy, listening and emotional intelligence to survive and thrive alongside the growing use of AI.
