Tell us about yourself and your company…
I started Biosential to help people suffering from a variety of conditions I felt were either being overly medicalized or not adequately treated by conventional pharmaceuticals. I wanted to use my medical training, knowledge and experience to create new products to approach Central Nervous System ailments from a direction that harmonizes with the body’s systems, rather than overwhelming them. My standards have always been medically sound research combined with rigorous clinical trials and quality product development.
How did you get started ? What were you doing in a previous life ?
I am a psychiatrist who was spending about equal time seeing patients and doing research. So many people were coming to me with issues around sleep and anxiety. I don’t prescribe sleep medications because they end up doing more harm in the form of tolerance and dependence than good. I had better results with prescribing L-tryptophan which physicians could do in Canada at the time. People who followed the course of treatment with L-tryptophan were able to see great improvement. I even took for my own sleep problems.
Why natural / organic / sustainable?
I first decided to develop a product using natural source tryptophan partly because it would be faster to get something to the market as opposed to developing a drug. As I began conducting my research, however, I soon realized a natural tryptophan product held much better properties than the synthetic version. There were still challenges because if it were easy to make an effective natural tryptophan product, someone would have already done it. While I am not opposed to medications and prescribe them when necessary, I have a natural inclination to respect the natural order of things and look for elements that work with the brain and the body instead of overpowering systems.
What’s your USP? What sets you apart from your competitors?
The product I developed, Zenbev Drink Mix, is unique. It is made from
all food ingredients. I sourced the best form of natural tryptophan from de-oiled, organic pumpkinseed meal and combined it with ingredients that encourage the brain to absorb the tryptophan. When tryptophan gets to the brain it is naturally converted to serotonin and melatonin. Under ideal conditions, your body takes over and manufactures a totally natural sleep with preserved sleep architecture. A number of neurochemical hurdles have to be overcome, though, before this process takes place. The formulation I developed of a natural source tryptophan combined with at strategic carbohydrate is unique. So unique, in fact that I have multiple patents on this combination of food ingredients. Zenbev provides what your brain needs to make your own natural melatonin. There isn’t any other sleep product that provides this efficacy, is natural and has no side-effects.
What kind of feedback you have received from clients ?
Zenbev has been very well received by people with minor sleep disturbance as well as those who have struggled for years with insomnia. As with most natural products, it takes time for some people to notice results. Others feel the effects immediately. Some people take Zenbev for periodic bouts of sleeplessness, others take it regularly to maintain good sleep patterns. It is important to note that Zenbev may be stopped at anytime without adverse effects. Multiple clinical studies have proven efficacy in insomnia as well as social anxiety.
What’s the next big launch / project coming up for you ?
We have recently launched RestBites in the UK which is an edible version of our Zenbev formulation. Initial reports are very positive. We have a number of other natural, science-based products in our pipeline.
