Running The Sober Club has meant I have worked with a lot of people recently who are now focusing on getting healthier, for many that means increasing exercise and often changing their diet.  There are of course so many routes to this, but what’s talked about a lot is the Keto diet, I know very little about it, so have asked a guest writer to write this piece for us. I’m not necessarily recommending the diet, though I do definitely recommend ditching the sugar and eating protein with every meal so it fits really well for anyone ditching the booze.

For many people, the first step toward a healthy diet is eliminating the amount of sugar they consume. The idea is to reduce the number of carbohydrates consumed to fewer than 50 grams a day and after several days, your body enters ketosis and the weight loss begins. It’s a good idea to use keto strips to monitor the ketone level in your body. It may shock you to realize just how much sugar you put in your body every day, from those spoons filled with sugar for your coffee to the potatoes served with that steak for dinner.

The keto diet is a way to break the reliance on sugar and to shed pounds piled on by too many carbs and too much of the sweet stuff.

As you start your journey toward a healthier lifestyle, remember that an exercise regimen doesn’t have to be intense and painful. It just needs to be consistent. With a 30-minute walk around the neighborhood several times a week, you can begin introducing exercise into your regular routine and give your body the cardio it needs.

As you become more accustomed to your new exercise routine, consider introducing new challenges and activities into your workout. Try some weight training for 15 minutes a day for a couple of days a week. You don’t necessarily need to use heavy weights, just something that helps exercise the muscles in your body. For example, you can carry light dumbbells during your regular walk or visit your neighborhood gym to use some of the equipment there on the days your not working on cardio.

Swimming also is another way to exercise your entire body without putting any undue stress on any muscles. And picking up a new sport can help keep your workout interesting, like tennis or basketball if you like the idea of exercising with a friend.

A healthy diet also is important to help bring back that muscle tone you desire and to give you more energy. A keto diet helps eliminate the excessive amounts of sugar that most people put in their bodies.

The keto diet, which has been used for weight loss, diabetes, therapeutic purposes, and other general health benefits, requires eliminating sweeteners and sweets. It also means cutting out the carbohydrates found in so many foods and beverages, like potatoes, jellies, and even beer. Things like soda and even energy drinks are packed with sugar. Eliminating these from your diet will greatly reduce the amount of sugar consumed and put you on a path to a healthier lifestyle, with more energy and interest in the new exercise routine you started.  There is a wide variety of foods you can eat on this diet.  Here’s some, (but there are more!)

It’s not difficult to live a healthier lifestyle. You just have to take that first step.
