It’s the time of year when unless we are lucky enough to live in sunnier climes we won’t be seeing much natural sunlight and when the summer finally kicks in I have some controversial views on how much we should be sunning ourselves and baring all.

I’ve long advocated the healing power of the sun, Richard Hobday wrote extensively on the subject and of course naturopaths from time in memoriam recommended daily sunbathing, albeit under controlled conditions for approximately one hour a day.

We need sunlight in order to have adequate levels of vitamin D and It is thought we have something of a worldwide epidemic of vitamin D deficiency, Britain is heading back to the 1920s when large numbers of children suffered from rickets. Cases of rickets have also increased by more than 400 per cent since 1996.

Vitamin D is a vitamin and pro-hormone which our bodies naturally produce by synthesising ultraviolet light from the sun. It is required in the body to make proper use of calcium for stronger bones and teeth and maintain a healthy immune system.

Vitamin D is crucial in activating the body’s immune defences and I’ve been telling people for years to get themselves tested, a leading oncologist said that at least 25 per cent of deaths from breast cancer would be saved if women only had adequate levels of Vitamin D. I eventually got myself tested and in the style of Gwyneth Paltrow who has famously been on record talking of her low levels – I was staggeringly low at 12 – even doctors recommend it should be between 50 and 85 and many natural health professionals suggest it should be well over 100! The supplements offered on prescription contained only 200 iu of vitamin D (plus artificial sweeteners so that was not an option for me), instead I was lucky enough to know about the Dlux range.

Dlux Spray 1000

Dlux was developed in conjunction with Jan de Vries, healthcare pioneer for over 40 years. It’s an oral spray in various strengths and is absorbed directly through the mucous membrane into the blood system – DLux3000 bypasses the digestive system offering the fastest way of absorbing the vitamin. This was confirmed by tests done at Cardiff University.

Get yourself tested!! Some GPs will do this for you or Vitamin D Home Testing kits can be bought from Better You for just £25. The blood spot tests are easy to do at home. The test is then posted to the lab at Birmingham NHS where the customer gets a full analysis of the results within five days.

Oh and my levels? Well when I eventually back after about 8 months having also got myself a bit of sunshine whenever it came out along with taking the Dlux – there was a nice graph of recovery to an awesome 161 – the doctor had said he’d never seen a recovery like it, I said ‘You do know why don’t you?’. Bless him he acquiesced that the supplements usually recommended were pretty useless, I showed him the Better You oral spray, he was impressed and said he would recommend it in future. Hurrah!
