I just read that a staggering 35 per cent of people in the UK have a tattoo, apparently over 30 per cent of people claim their tattoo makes them feel sexy, and just under 30 per cent say they feel rebellious, just 5 per cent believe it makes them look intelligent

Around a quarter of people believe that tattoos affect our attractiveness

I don’t and I will be honest, I was put off because I knew someone who had a tattoo of his girlfriend’s name (when he was drunk) and later regretted it and need a skin graft to have it removed.   I’m guessing that’s changed now and procedures are simpler (apparently now it’s possible to cover one tattoo with another)

I did, when the kids were younger, use a ‘pretend’ tattoo, it said something like ‘Peace’ and freaked the kids out!  Recently I have seen some inspiring tattoos on friends and colleagues, some have ‘conscious’ statements and are like a force for good.

In the US an even higher percentage of people have tattoos so I asked a US guest writer to write this for us.

Are you thinking about getting a tattoo in the near future? If so, then you might be looking for something that can express your own personal style; however, even if you are looking at getting Fineline tattoos, you need to make sure that you ask the right questions. That way, you know that you will get a tattoo that you are happy with. What are a few questions that you need to ask before you decide to get a tattoo?

What Will This Look Like in the Future?

First, you to ask what the tattoo is going to look like in the future. Even though you may think a tattoo looks great right now, you do not know what is going to happen down the road. For example, ask the tattoo artist if the design is going to fade over time. Or, if you might be able to incorporate this tattoo into a bigger design down the road. Furthermore, what happens if your body type changes? You need to understand how this tattoo will look. Make sure you ask about the future!

How Many Sessions Will This Take?

Next, you also need to ask how many sessions the tattoo is going to take in order for the design to be finished. If you are getting a particularly large tattoo, it could take multiple sessions in order to finish the tattoo design. Are you prepared to sit down and multiple sessions? How much is this going to cost? You need to have a timeline for how long the tattoo is going to take to get finished.

Have You Done this Tattoo Before?

Finally, you need to ask whether the tattoo artist has done this design before. You want to work with someone who has experience doing a design that is similar to yours.  Even though the tattoo artist may not have done the exact design before, you need to make sure that he or she has done something similar. If the tattoo artist has done something similar, then he or she may be able to advise you on what direction to take. That way, you know you are going to end up with a design that you like. Ask for prior reviews and references as well. This can be helpful if you are trying to find a tattoo artist to do a specific design.  Take the time to find the right person.

Ask the Right Questions

These are just a few of the most important questions that you need to ask before you decide to get a tattoo. Because there are lots of tattoo options, you need to take the time to evaluate all of your choices and find the one that is right for you.

I’d add just one more question, how can you care for your tattoos naturally?  Seek out good natural aftercare; it definitely isn’t a time to add harsh chemicals!
