Women’s‌ ‌Environmental‌ ‌Network‌ ‌‌(WEN) has‌ ‌recently‌ ‌announced‌ ‌that‌ ‌this‌ ‌year’s‌ ‌‌Environmenstrual‌ ‌Week‌ ‌‌will‌ ‌take‌ ‌place‌ ‌between‌ ‌October‌ ‌19-25. ‌By talking about ending period poverty, having conversations about reusables and plastic free options and breaking the taboo about periods they are leading a revolution for healthy eco-friendly menstrual products! You can join in the conversation here

This week may be the perfect time to make the switch to a more healthy, eco-friendly choice of menstrual products, now more than ever we have options. 90% of most standard period products are single use plastic, switching to organic, non-plastic products is both an environmentally AND health-friendly solution…. AND when opting for reusables, such as menstrual cups or washable pads, you will save money in the long term!

Preeti Murlidharan, the founder of LUX Store which creates organic cotton period underwear, had her own experiences around periods when she was post-partum following the birth of her child. Preeeti recently sat down with relationship and sex education expert Saskia Boujo to chat period myths and old wives’ tales, ahead of Environmenstrual week and here they share the top myths they want to leave behind in 2020!

The top myths are:

  1. Periods are dirty.
  2. The menstrual cycle is just the bleeding phase.
  3. The vagina and vulva need cleaning.
  4. Periods are something to hide.
  5. People can tell when you’re on your period. FALSE
  6. Every woman gets PMS, and it always manifests as irritability and crankiness.
  7. Exercise while menstruating is unhealthy and can damage the uterus.
  8. Your period should last for exactly one week.
  9. Period Syncing with friends.

“When I created LUX Store in 2018 it was because I couldn’t find a plastic free period solution that worked for me. For too long periods have been taboo and people with periods haven’t shared their concerns with how pads or tampons may be uncomfortable or ineffective.

LUX exists, so women and people with periods can enjoy healthier periods. That comes hand in hand with empowering young people with knowledge and facts and I am proud that LUX is playing its part to break down those taboos once and for all.”
