I know its Mother’s Day on Sunday 27 March, but what better day to honor ‘family systems’ and think about healing your past than participating in a ‘Family Constellations’ session.

Some of you know that I believe Family Constellations transformed my life, I am forever grateful to Julie Toms who facilitated a constellation for me that changed everything – in 30 minutes! I’d had an extremely difficult relationship with my mother and was extremely anxious and insecure. Of course, once I slotted the missing piece into the holistic jigsaw (ditched the booze) I could see that there was more work to be done. I believe in the power of Family Constellations so much that I trained as a Family Constellations practitioner.

It can be tricky to explain, as it’s certainly not conventional but Family constellations is hitting the mainstream.in Gwyneth Paltrow’s Netflix series Sex, Love & goop, in episode 5 you can see how family constellations facilitator Kato Wittich helps a couple leave behind relationship patterns that have not served them well in the past.

I’m fascinated learning about ‘inherited family trauma’ (Check out the excellent book ‘It Didn’t Start With You’ by Mark Wolynn (a podcast guest) and the impact of adverse childhood experiences. I also love the work of Gabor Mate, and Vincent Felitti (The ACE study) and I find it very powerful to realise that even mild ‘adverse child experiences’ have a negative impact on health and wellbeing in adulthood. In the original ACE study, those who scored 4 or more were 7 times more likely to be an alcoholic, 10 times more likely to have injected drugs, and more likely to experience depression and relationship breakups.

If you are ready to make positive changes, absolutely no experience is necessary to join, but rather an open mind and a willingness to participate, and it’s not ‘acting’ or psychodrama, but it can be profound.

We will start the day with an interview with Rafe Nauen, a leading expert in adverse childhood experiences, trauma work and family constellations. There will be time for Q and A, and then we will do some constellations. As this is a one price event we won’t be pre-booking the ‘issues’ so everyone will be invited to be a participant, a ‘representative’, and some will experience their own ‘constellation’. Many people find it benefits them hugely just to witness constellations, they can be very powerful. It has been described as ‘Homeopathy for the soul’.

One participant from my first event said:

The constellation helped me understand that my parents gave me life and that’s all I need from them. All the anxiety is theirs not mine, so I gave it back to them as I don’t need their emotions. I have taken my place as their beautiful daughter I know they are behind me, and the love flows forward.

I have a renewed love for my parents and memories of my past now come into my mind of when they showed me their love, I understand why they never told me or hugged me, but I can see from their actions that they did. I see things from their perspective now. I feel a huge sense of relief, pride in myself and renewed confidence and self-belief. I have suffered from a low self-esteem for as long as I can remember but that’s behind me know thanks to having the courage to be curious and show up at the Family Constellations.

Family Constellations has also taught me that when I engage my body and mind, I can heal the angst in my soul from within. When our mind is closed off, maybe by something our subconscious chooses not to remember our body has the memory very clearly and the body aches and the emotions are not ones of joy, they’re depression, anxiety, fear, anger, sadness.  I now understand that I didn’t like those feelings so when I consumed alcohol the emotions were numbed. ‘I am enough’ is a phrase I’ve heard so often, but I never fully understood the meaning of it until I participated.  Now I can feel with my body mind and soul and it is the most calming yet invigorating and inspiring feeling ever.
