When we want to focus on optimum health and well being it can sometimes be tricky to know what approach to take. There are many kinds of complimentary medicine, and over the years I have benefited greatly from Homeopathy, Naturopathy and all kinds of holistic treatments from cranial osteopathy through to Reiki and kinesiology and everything in between.  In more recent years I have become aware of functional medicine, which is biology based but really does offer the holistic approach, and for the times when you really do need an expert Doctor’s opinion its ideal.

I’m delighted that the Taymount Clinic are involved in the Platinum Awards and they are now offering this service.  Janey

What is Functional Medicine?

A growing branch in the world of alternative medicine, functional medicine relies on the basic principle that every person responds differently to every illness. The biology-based approach addresses the root cause or causes of disease, such as genetic makeup, environmental influences, and lifestyle choices, and combines both modern and traditional treatments.

Functional Medicine is a move away from a ‘one size fits all’ approach to the treatment and care of patients with a particular condition, to one which uses new approaches to better manage patients’ health and target therapies to achieve the best outcomes in the management of a patient’s disease or predisposition to disease.

How does it work?

By treating the individual and not their symptoms, functional medicine practitioners tackle chronic conditions with a comprehensive approach.

A diagnosis can be the result of more than one cause. For example, depression can be caused by many different factors, including inflammation. Likewise, a cause such as inflammation may lead to a number of different diagnoses, including depression. The precise manifestation of each cause depends on the individual’s genes, environment, and lifestyle, and only treatments that address the right cause will have lasting benefit beyond symptom suppression.

An in-depth analysis of your health history is taken, including a review of past lab tests and medical records. Based on this analysis, the doctor will work with you to formulate a wellness roadmap that identifies — and addresses — the root cause of any current issues while helping you build a system for preventing disease. You’ll leave with a personalized and tailored wellness roadmap with clear steps to address your needs, including supplements and/or dietary suggestions, additional testing recommendations and more actionable advice.

The Taymount Clinic, Hertfordshire, UK, is known worldwide as a specialist centre for providing Faecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT) procedures for the replacement of good and healthy intestinal bacteria in situations where unbalanced gut bacteria are thought to play a significant part. FMT is the re-stocking of gut bacteria from a health and disease-free source, to create what is described as more normal, healthier bacterial levels.

Originally founded in 2003 as a small private clinic focusing on improving and maintaining optimal digestive health, initially the focus at Taymount was on gut flora dysbiosis. The methods employed were changing gut flora using a colon lavage procedure to remove the existing microbiome and then utilising complex blends of proprietary brands of commercially available probiotics as either oral supplementation or by cultured enema implant. Dietary advice follows the procedures to ensure that foods associated with the fermentation processes of commensal bacteria are included in the diet to optimise bacterial growth.

It is not always about a specific disease condition or a known diagnosed illness, an increasing number of people who do not have a formal diagnosis experience bloating, sluggishness and general gut issues which are not directly related to a specific illness, but more to lifestyle factors including stress, post-holiday illness, antibiotic treatments, and today’s chaotic lifestyles and eating habits.

Here is a patient Testimonial for her first consultation with Dr Ruby :

“My first consultation with Dr Ruby was a bit of a mix conventional

medicine and Functional approach. I felt that I got the best of both

worlds. I felt that I was in the best place to combine old knowledge

with new. Her relaxed and friendly way made me feel at ease and safely

taken care of. I have seen many therapists and doctors along my road to

get well, but I am going to stick with Dr Ruby to continue my journey to

my best health.”
