Is it time to stop drinking alcohol this month? Hypnotherapist Ailsa Frank shares 3 tips to detox your start to the year.

Dry January can be a good opportunity to begin to break the habit of drinking. Although, if you don’t make changes on a subconscious level, when you start drinking again in February you will more than likely slip back into old habits quickly. You could even drink more than before.

Abstaining from alcohol can be similar to dieting which often results in weight gain when you go back to eat normal foods. Also, if you drink high levels of alcohol prior to January, such as binge drinking over Christmas and New Year, then you suddenly decide to stop in January it could be detrimental to your health. Your body needs time to adjust to a reduction in alcohol. I work with clients to reduce alcohol drinking with hypnotherapy in a gradual way. This allows the body and mind to adjust to the changes safely. Hypnotherapy breaks the habit of drinking by reframing old drinking behaviour, it releases the cravings for alcohol and hypnosis tackles the root of the addictive alcohol behaviour.

If you want to stop drinking alcohol altogether it is wise to do this in a balanced way. By making the changes on a subconscious level with hypnosis you can create new habits of when you do drink alcohol, you’ll find you have less interest in drinking. It is possible to create a more ‘take it or leave it’ attitude towards drinking wine, beer or spirits. With new self-control, you can feel comfortable to sip slowly and be satisfied with a sensible amount of alcohol. You can tailor your drinking in individual sessions, or you can listen to  the Take Control of Alcohol hypnosis downloads to break the alcohol drinking habit whilst you relax at home. I would suggest always starting with a sparkling water when out socially or during the evening in the house. This will get you into new behaviour.

Here are 3 tips to help you create drink free success

  1. In the morning prepare a tray with a special teapot, cup and a herbal tea of your choice. When you do finish your day you will find the tray ready and waiting for you which will help you avoid going to the fridge for wine.
  2. After your working day take a shower or soak in a warm bath, slip into comfy clothes and do some gentle yoga stretches or slow Tai Chi movement to relax your muscles and calm your mind.
  3. Visualise yourself waking refreshed and invigorated, getting on with your day with a spring in your step, motivated and organised. Imagine coming home to your home which is like a spa hotel. Treat yourself to a face pack, play music in the background or watch a favourite movie.
